NFL or Bust

On Wednesday, Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno announced their respective intent to enter the NFL draft. I’m not at all surprised by their decisions as both are projected as first round draft picks and playing for millions of guaranteed dollars is better than playing for free. As Georgia’s lost their starting quarterback and running back now it’s time to look toward their replacements.

Earlier in the week Coach Mark Richt and Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo named Joe Cox as the starting quarterback for next season. Cox has been a career backup while at UGA. First, he sat behind D.J. Shockley, who only started one season and won 10 games, a SEC Championship Game MVP, and third place vote in the AP Player of the Year. In three years at UGA, Cox has 432 career passing yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception.

Coaches Richt and Bobo haven’t commented on Moreno’s replacement. Current, UGA has four running backs on the roster. Caleb King was last year’s second-leading rusher behind Moreno with 61 carries for 247 yards; however, King fell out of favor with the coaching staff near the end of the season as he had difficulties with pass block. Richard Samuel was the third-leading rusher with 133 yards on 26 carries, with an average of 5.1 yards per year. Additionally, Samuel showed great speed as kickoff returner. The other two players are redshirt freshman Dontavius Jackson and Carlton Thomas.
