#21 Georgia 41, South Carolina 37

Prior to the start of the game, everyone, including myself, thought the Bulldogs and Gamecocks would engage in a defensive struggle, but apparently the respective players and coaches didn’t get the memorandum as Georgia out dueled South Carolina in an entertaining offensive showdown. It’s good to see the Dawgs show some offensive spark as the Dawgs put 41 points on the scoreboard.

Nine pounds lighter Joe Cox bounced back from a lackluster debut, finishing 17 of 24 for 201 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Although Cox is a 5th year senior, he’s still a rookie starter, but tonight he showed improved poise in the pocket and zip on his passes. If this Cox shows up every Saturday, Georgia will be in position to be competitive this season.

The wide receivers helped Cox, especially all-SEC receiver, A.J. Green, who finished with 86 yards and 1 touchdown. Green continues to show why he has a promising future. The catches he makes are speculator. Orson Charles added 38 yards, Tavarres King had 27 yards, Richard Samuel added 23, Michael Moore had 23 yards and 1 touchdown, and Shaun Chapas contributed with 4 yards.

Richard Samuel played like a true starter tonight, running with purpose and power. His yards after contact was improved and he should explosive speed. Samuel finished with 65 yards and 1 touchdown. Backup tailback Carlton Thomas added 22 yards and utility player, Branden Smith, rushed for 65 yards and 1 touchdown.

More important that offensive production, Georgia’s special teams played great. Brandon Boykin set a school record with a 100 yard kick return for a touchdown and Blair Walsh kicked 2 field goals.

Although the G-Day defense allowed 37 points, they played solid defense, applying pressure. Brandon Boykin had 1 interception and several players sacked the Gamecocks’ quarterback several times.

As the season progress, Georgia will need to solidify its pass defense, especially those short throws under 15 yards.
