#21 Georgia 20, Arizona State 17

Who are the Georgia Bulldogs? In an effort to learn more about this year’s team, I (along with Wubya and his daddy) travelled to Athens, Georgia to see the Bulldogs take on the Sun Devils between the hedges. I left the game with more questions than answers, as this year’s team is definitely an enigma, but here’s what I know: (1) this year’s Dawgs have a flare for the dramatic – you will cheer and jeer as you watch them; (2) the players have plenty of heart and are willing to fight through adversity, self-created and otherwise; (3) A.J. Green is definitely the best player on the team and may be one of the best wide receivers in the country; (4) Georgia offensive players must learn to not turn the ball over; and (4) the future of the Bulldogs is bright as the Dawgs are playing a lot of true freshman.

Last nights game was wet and Georgia played sloppy allowing 3 turnovers and committing 6 penalties for 45 yards. The Bulldogs have to improve their discipline especially if as they enter the meat of their SEC schedule; however, at the end of the day, all that matters is a win, and Georgia won on the last play of the game with a Blair Walsh field goal with 2 seconds left.

Joe Cox finished 17 of 31 for 242 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, with one being a pick-6. Cox made some terrible throws with no Bulldogs in sight and while watching him in person, it’s clear that he doesn’t always look through his progression. Cox must learn that he can’t just lock in on one receiver.

Georgia elected to split carries between Caleb King and Richard Samuel, with both carrying the ball 11 times. King finished with 55 yards, 1 fumble and Samuel finished with 25 yards. Neither back dominated and Samuel appeared to run timid at times. He just didn’t hit the hole with authority like he did the week before against Arkansas. King has the moves and big play potential, but still hasn’t proven he’s ready to be the full time carrier. Noticeably missing was running back Carlton Thomas who played in the first three games.

My offensive game ball goes to wide receiver A.J. Green who finished with 153 yards on 8 receptions. Some of the catches he made were pure spectacular, especially the 22 yard catch that set up the game winning field goal. He somehow twisted in mid-air and caught an underthrown pass between two defenders. Kicker Blair Walsh gets mad love for his 2 field goals, especially his game winning effort at the end of the game. Walsh is a perfect 8 of 8 this season.

Next week the Dawgs take on the Louisiana State Bengal Tigers, the #4 ranked team in the county. Don’t get me wrong, LSU is a great team, but I’m not completely sold on their dominance as they’ve struggled against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State and neither of these teams are traditional powerhouses.
