Earlier this week the University of Georgia gymnastic team won their fifth (5th) consecutive national title beating out Utah, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, and Louisiana State. This is the Gym Dog’s tenth (10th) national title overall and ties a NCAA record for the most titles. After the match, UGA Coach Suzanne Yoculan is scheduled to retire and leaves with an impressive resume: 10 NCAA championships, 16 SEC titles, 21 regional titles, 5 time national coach of the year, and she has coached 33 individuals to individual championships.
Congratulations to the Gym Dogs. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t typically follow gymnastics, but any team, whether fielded by males or females that win 5 consecutive national titles should get major credit for this accomplishment. To accomplish this feet it requires coaches to recruit consistently, players to show continued growth, and a competitive mind set that doesn’t get complaisant. I realize that football and basketball are completely different, but both programs could learn multiple lessons from Coach Yoculan and her Gym Dogs.
