President-Elect Barack Obama

Moments ago Senator Barack Obama was elected the nation’s first black president. For me and many African-Americans, Obama’s victory symbolizes more than just ascension to the nation’s highest political position; it symbolizes a historic triumph over racial barriers deeply rooted in America’s rich history that argued that a minority was ill prepared to lead our great country.

CNN projected that Senator Obama netted 338 electoral votes to Senator McCain’s 155 votes and he won the popular vote in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii.
