#1 Georgia 45, Georgia Southern 21

Georgia Bulldog football is finally here, and the #1 ranked Bulldogs hit the ground running with a thumping of instate foe Georgia Southern Eagles. Thanks to Wubya, I was Between the Hedges to witness the 45 – 21 beat down, and the introduction of Uga VII.

As far as the game went, the Dawgs looked dominant at times on both offense and defense, but also looked undisciplined on both sides of the field because of 11 costly penalties, blotched defense coverage, and miscommunication between quarterback Matthew Stafford and the wide receivers. Before looking down on the team, it must be noted that Coach Mark Richt pulled a majority of the starters early in the game. For example, backup quarterback Joe Cox and backup running back Richard Samuels played a series in the first quarter, and Knowshon Moreno may not have played in second half. Additionally, the team played a standard defense and rarely applied pressure, so the Eagles were able to move down the field.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford finished 13 of 21 for 275 yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back Knowshon Moreno carried the ball 8 times for 59 yards and 3 touchdowns. Freshman kicker, Blair Walsh kicked a 52 yard field goal. Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe continued to hit and tackle hard and grabbed 1 interception. As mentioned above, Coach Richt played backups and I was really impressed by highly touted running back Caleb King and wide receiver A.J. Green. King finished with 95 yards and Green finished with 2 catches for 40 yards and 1 touchdown.

Some may say that Georgia didn’t play as the most dominate team in the country yesterday, and I can agree to some extent, but as a fan I’m happy with the outcome of the game. I’m glad they had some missteps because now Coach Richt and his staff have something to constructively criticize. Now they can say, “Guys you weren’t that great. Had that been a SEC team, we would’ve lost,” as opposed to the Dawgs playing flawless and the team starts buying into its own hype. At least this way, the team can stay hungry and motivated.

Next Week: Central Michigan Chippewas
