I thought Fox News was supposed to be “fair and balanced” in their national news coverage, but after reading an Associated Press story yesterday, it’s painfully clear that the folks at Fox News aren’t fair and balanced when it comes to Obama family. In early June, Fox anchor E.D. Hill referred to the Obamas’ fist bump as a “terrorist fist jab” and on Wednesday, June 11, the Fox News Channel referred to Michelle Obama as “Obama’s baby mama” on an onscreen graphic.
I find Fox News’ conduct to be downright pitiful and unbecoming of a news organization supposedly reporting about politics. A fist bump, knuckles, and/or giving pound has nothing to do with terrorism. It’s a celebration, like giving a high five, throwing up the peace sign, or giving a thumb’s up and most people know this, so why even try to insinuate otherwise.
The “baby mama” graphic is definitely uncalled for as a “baby mama” is slang for the unmarried mother of a man’s child, and not his wife, or even his girlfriend, and it’s pretty clear that Barack and Michelle Obama are married. I believe that Fox’s sole purpose of using graphics with “baby mama” is to indulge ignorant stereotypes of black men having children out-of-wedlock and to demean Michelle Obama’s role.
