Addition by Subtraction

Today the Falcons released one time starting quarterback Joey Harrington which fuels the speculation that the Birds are going to either draft a quarterback with the third overall pick, or they’ll trade their top pick for later draft choices. Harrington’s single season with the Falcons was up and down at best, starting 10 games, throwing 7 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Harrington showed great off-the-field judgment, but lacked on-the-field judgment and failed to produce victories. As a result, he was benched midseason and replaced by Byron Leftwich* who had 2 starts and then Chris Redman who had 4 starts.

As a result of Harrington’s release, the Birds only have 2 active quarterbacks on the roster – Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley, and 1 inactive quarterback – Michael Vick. Both active quarterbacks are unproven in the NFL and Vick’s NFL’s status is unknown at this time. If the Birds decide to pick a quarterback in the April 26-27th draft, the top prospects are Matt Ryan (Boston College), Chad Henne (Michigan), Brian Brohm (Louisville), Joe Flacco (Delaware), John David Booty (USC), and Andre’ Woodson (Kentucky).

* The Falcons released Byron Leftwich earlier in the year.
