BCS Change Needed

Congratulations goes to the Louisiana State Tigers for their impressive 38 – 24 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes. This makes the second straight year a SEC team as taken home the national title trophy. This year’s college football season has been the best in recent memory. There were so many upsets, so many surprise contenders, and every week there was it was truly a Russian roulette as to who would be ranked #1 and have an opportunity to play for the national title. I intend no disrespect to national champion LSU, but even after the conclusion of the bowl season, there are at least four other teams worthy of being called best in the land – Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, and Southern California. Unfortunately, under the current system we’ll never truly know which team is the best.

University of Georgia president and chairmen of the NCAA’s executive committee Michael Adams submitted a letter to NCAA president Myles Brand encouraging the NCAA to replace the controversial BCS with an 8 team playoff. Adams’ proposition calls for a 7 game, single elimination tournament run by the NCAA. The Fiesta, Orange, Rose, and Sugar bowl would become quarterfinal games. His proposal also calls for a reduction of the college football schedule from 12 games per year to 11 to accommodate the student – athlete who may participate in the football tournament.
