And Then There Were Two

Former Senator John Edwards withdrew from the presidential primary today. He delivered his announcement in New Orleans, the same state were he initially announced that he would pursue the Democratic Party domination. Edwards ended his campaign because of poor showings in early primary states. Edwards’ focused his campaign on the plight of America’s poor and the ever decreasing middle-class. In some respects, Edwards framed the central themes of the Democratic primary, by advocating for healthcare reform and the creation of a timeline for troop withdrawal in Iraq. At this time, former Senator Edwards has not official endorsed either Senator Obama or Senator Clinton.

I’m left wondering how Edwards’ departure will effect Super Tuesday. Previously, he’s polled extremely well with White males in the south. Who will benefit from Edwards’ withdrawal? Is this the last time we’ve seen Edwards? Specifically, will he pop up as a vice president running mate for either Senator Obama or Senator Clinton? I could see him on Obama’s ticket, since they teamed up early on to take Clinton and they both push for change and advocate for healthcare reform, but I also could see him as Clinton’s running mate. He’d soften her image and strengthen her domestic agenda. As we all know, the second best way to eventually land in the White House is to be a vice president and I believe Edwards wants to eventually land in the White House.
