#7 Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 17

Georgia secures the Governor’s Cup for the 7th year in a row, as the mighty Bulldogs beat their instate rivals the Yellow Jackets 31 to 17. I’d been looking forward to this game all Thanksgiving weekend, but I almost missed it thanks to Cream City’s ABC affiliate pulling a last minute switch. Here’s the deal, all week ABC advertised a national broadcast of Georgia v. Georgia Tech on regular TV, but for some odd reason, the Cream City ABC affiliate decided to show the West Virginia v. Connecticut game instead of my beloved Bulldogs. As a result, I had to scramble at the last minute to find a place showing the game. Thankfully, the game came on ESPN 2 and I was able to watch it over a friend’s house.

My offensive game ball goes to senior tailback Thomas Brown who finished his last regular season game with 139 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Brown has battled back from several injuries this season and subsequently lost a substantial amount of carriers to outstanding redshirt freshman Knowshon Moreno. Through it all he’s maintained his character and has shown himself to be a great team leader as he never complained about carriers and willing went in and made the most of his playing time. Brown finishes his UGA career, excluding any numbers in this year’s 2007 bowl game, with 2,573 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. You will be missed next season Thomas Brown. I hope you get an opportunity to play in the NFL.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford finished 14 of 29 for 214 yards, 1 touchdown, and an impressive 35 yard touchdown run. Stafford’s showed some speed during the run, and I can tell that he’s really matured as a player during his sophomore campaign. His arm strength is amazing and he’s starting to show touch and accuracy. Additionally, Georgia’s top wide receivers are definitely helping him out this season, especially with the reemergence of Sean Bailey, 85 yards, and Mohammad Massaquoi, 74 yards and 1 touchdown. Kris Durham, Kenneth Harris, Shaun Chapas, Tripp Chandler, and Brannan Southerland each had 1 reception.

The G-Day defense continued to play top notch football, holding Tech’s outstanding running back Tashard Choice to 134 yards and disrupting the Yellow Jackets’ passing game. Georgia is probably playing the best football in the country and it’s a shame that this team won’t have an opportunity to compete for a SEC Title. Go Dawgs!

I normally don’t shout out opposing SEC teams, but big ups to the Tennessee Volunteers for fighting off last minute drives against both Vanderbilt and
Kentucky in their last games to win the SEC East. Every Dawg fan wanted them to fold, but they hung tough and now they’ll be playing for the title. How sad, no Georgia game this week but we’ll find out which BCS bowl we’ll be heading to. Who knows with this season, Georgia still has an outside chance to play for the National Title if both West Virginia and Missouri lose – now that would be too sweet!
