Monday Night Nose Dive

In the world of sports, a win in front of a nationwide audience can solve lots of problems. On the flip side, an embarrassing loss in front of a nationwide audience can exaggerate existing problems. Unfortunately, the Birds are victim to the later statement. The New York Giants crushed the Atlanta Falcons 31-10 in game that was never really close. It’s bad when the home crowd boos you, but it’s even worst when the Georgia Dome is near empty with four (4) minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Early last week Falcons veterans spoke out and complained about the team’s performance. Blame for this horrific season was shifted from players to coaches to administrative personal and back. By mid-week, an apparent peace agreement had been reached and players and coaches had agreed that everyone needed to step up and play with heart and execute with precision. Unfortunately, all the talk was nothing more than talk as this team continued to under-perform. And to make matters worst, the Birds decided not to show up when the whole world was watching Monday Night Football.

There were some high moments in all this gloom and doom. Morton “Ageless Wonder” Anderson actually made a 47 yard field goal; Jerious Norwood delivered an explosive 67 yard rushing touchdown; DeAngelo Hall intercepted a pass, and John Abraham continued to show what type of force he is when he’s healthy.

This season has been a nightmare for a Falcons fan like me. My beloved Birds* are 1-5. Although Michael Vick is still on the team, he’s indefinitely suspended, he’s a felon, and apparently in loan default for millions. Fun Bobby’s “high powered” offense has only scored one touchdown in 10 quarters, and after three (3) horrible defensive seasons, the Birds still can’t stop the run (or the pass).

* By now, I’d hope the Falcons had re-earned the “Dirty Birds” nickname, so popularly coined in 1998 by the real Jamal Anderson, but this team like last years team doesn’t deserve the honor of being called “Dirty Birds”. For now, the Falcons are also known as the Birds.
