I watched Saturday night’s Georgia Bulldog game attentively because I wanted to see if this year’s team was tough. Historically, Georgia had a 1-12 record when playing in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; the Tide was the higher ranked team and the national media claimed that Georgia wasn’t man enough to beat Alabama, and the Dawgs were coming off a conference lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Dawgs silenced their critics and proved to me that they are tough by beating Alabama 26-23 in overtime. The Bulldogs controlled most of the game until the fourth quarter, when they lost a 10-point lead and kicker Brandon Coutu missed a 47-yard field goal at the end of regulation. The Crimson Tide had all the momentum going into overtime. They were playing at home in front of 92,138 fans and their offense the manhandled Georgia defense in the fourth quarter.
Georgia won the overtime coin toss and elected to play defense first. The G-Day defense did their job, holding Alabama to a field goal. Now, it was time for the offense to do its job and win the game. Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo wasted little time, calling a down field pass play on Georgia first offensive play of overtime. The result was a 25-yard touchdown throw from Matthew Stafford to Mikey Henderson.
Stafford went 19 of 35 for 224 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Running back Thomas Brown rushed for 74 yards and had 39 receiving yards, and 1 touchdown, while running back Knowshon Moreno rushed for 74 yards, 1 touchdown, and had 22 yards receiving.
Georgia continues SEC play as they host Ole Mississippi next week.
