Washington insiders have it wrong and Senator Barack Obama has it right. America should be willing to talk with hostile countries like Cuba, Iran, and North Korea. If the conditions are correct and progress can be made through dialogue, then why not discuss as opposed to settling dispute through arms and violence. It makes no sense to act as if another country doesn’t exist because we don’t like their leader or its policies. America is the world’s strongest country; we should return to acting like a super power and show no fear and organize talks with hostile countries. For all we know, something positive may come as a result. Honestly, they probably won’t adopt our mode of thinking, but at least they won’t be able to say that we’re “too afraid” to talk with them.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some idealistic and naïve peace type that believes that every country’s agenda can be accomplished and we can live in harmony. I’ve come to realize that some people and some countries want chaos and are perfectly content simply hating America, but we shouldn’t let that stop us. We need to break from the President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney mode of non-talking because it’s too decisive and it’s isolating us from the rest of the world.
President Bush and others would argue that we shouldn’t talk to a majority of the Middle East countries because they hate us, but if you look at history, you’ll realize that America has always taken the first step to talking with our enemies because when you’re a world power, you have to act like one. President Richard Nixon did the impossible; he talked with the Chinese, and more recently (but not really), President Ronald Regan did the impossible; he talked with the Russians which led to the end of the Cold War.
If given an opportunity, Senator Barack Obama has already voiced a desire to show similar strength by organizing talks with countries hostile to the U.S. This is just one of many reasons why people should vote for Senator Barack Obama as President of the United States because America needs a man who is not afraid to deal with those who don’t like us. Years ago, they said America couldn’t co-exist with China and the Soviet Union (Russia), but now we do, and with Obama as the Commander and Chief, we’ll possibly have a better chance of co-existing with a radicalized Middle East because he's not afraid to talk with them and work through our differences.
