The University of Georgia Bulldogs decided to take the advice of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl and “eat more Hokies” in the bowl formerly known as the Peach Bowl as UGA rallied from 18 points to defeat the Virginia Tech Hokies 31 – 24. The Dawgs finish their season at 9 – 4, with three straight wins over ranked opponents: #5 Auburn, #16 Georgia Tech, and #14 Virginia Tech. This streak was a first for the program.
This was definitely a game of two halves. UGA couldn’t do any thing right for the first two quarters, going into halftime 21 – 3, but then a completely motivated team came out after halftime, scoring a quick field goal, then recovering an onside kick, and then forcing four consecutive turnovers on Va. Tech’s next four drives.
Freshman quarterback Matthew Stafford, offensive MVP of the game, finished 9 of 21 passing for 129 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception, but his total included passes for 41 yards to tight end Martrez Milner, 24 yards to wide out Mario Raley and 27 yards to fullback Brannon Southerland. Running backs Kregg Lumpkin and Danny Ware finished with 39 yards and 24 yards respectively.
Defensive MVP Tony Taylor and the rest of the G-Day defense deserve the game ball because their play got Georgia back in the game. Taylor finished with 2 interceptions. The defense manhandled the Hokies. They pressured the quarterback and forced 3 interceptions and held Va. Tech running backs to 42 to rushing yards and 189 total yards.
I’m proud of my Georgia Bulldogs because they overcame embarrassing loses to Vanderbilt and Kentucky and finished the season strong with wins over three ranked teams. They could’ve chalked the season up as a disaster and started imploding, but they didn’t. The Bulldog organization acted like professionals and finished the drill and because of they’re hard work, they’ll be remembered for all they accomplished as opposed to the setbacks they experienced. I wished the Atlanta Falcons would’ve followed they’re example.
