#10 Georgia 14, Ole Mississippi 9

For the second week in a row the UGA offense stalls during the first half of game and trails at halftime. Coach Mark Richt should reevaluate his offense approach. His throw first mentality isn’t working thus far because freshman Matthew Stafford and redshirt freshman Joe Cox are inexperienced and need more time to develop. Stafford went 7 of 18 for 91 yards and Cox went 4 of 10 for 24 yards. That’s a combined 11 of 28 or 39% pass completion for 115 yards. We need a consistent quarterback quickly. If they’re going to post those numbers, then they need to be making amazing plays in other ways, i.e. Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Michael Vick. Stafford and Cox aren’t making those type of plays at the present moment.

Georgia should rely on its strong running back core. More specifically, the Bulldogs should run with Kregg Lumpkin because he’s shaping up to be the most dependable of the group. He runs with purpose and makes the tough first downs. He rushed for 101 yards off 13 carries. Full back Brannan Sutherland also punched in two touchdowns on the ground.

As the UGA quarterbacks struggle, the wide receivers will struggle. They aren’t playing good football. They’re not getting open and they’re dropping too many passes. Sophomore Demiko Goodman was the only playmaker of the game. He caught 4 passes for 71 yards and made an awesome diving catch. What happened to Mohamed Massaquoi? He’s fallen off the chart. He had such a great freshman campaign. Massaquoi’s been struggling this season with his route running and dropping the ball. I hope he gets back healthy and focused. He has the talent to be an All-SEC wide receiver.

Once again, the Georgia G-Day defense gets the game ball. Georgia’s poor offensive performance in the first half probably should’ve closed the door on the Bulldogs perfect season, but the G-Day guys once again do it big and hold the Rebels to 3 points at halftime. Offense, help the defense out.

In closing, it was good seeing ex-Volunteers quarterback Brent Schaeffer back in Division I football behind center for the Ole Miss Rebels. Schaeffer acted completely opposite of former UGA quarterback D.J. Shockley – he left when he realized that he’d always be the number two guy behind current Tennessee quarterback Erik Anige. He’s played for three schools in three years, even playing for Division I-AA. He knows his situation better than I do, but I think he would’ve developed more as a player by staying at Tennessee. Just think, he’s had to learn three systems, three groups of players, and adjust to three different campus lives – that’s tough.

Next Week: The #15 Tennessee Volunteers come to Sanford Stadium to play between the hedges at 7:45 p.m. The game’s on national television and it’s under the lights. The “Las Vegas experts” pick the Vols, and if you look at how both teams are playing – Georgia bad and Tennessee good – this could get ugly. I’ll be in the place, cheering loud and proud. My prediction: UGA 17, UT 14.
