#10 Georgia 34, Alabama – Birmingham 0

The G-Day defense produces a second straight shutout as UGA rolls over UAB. Brit Meat and I witnessed the devastation first hand as we piled into Stanford Stadium with 90,000 other Bulldog fans. Although it was hot as all get-out, it was fun watching the Dawgs lay the smackdown on the Blazers. I didn’t know what to expect prior to the game. Last time UAB played between the Hedges, UGA inched out a 16 – 13 victory as Victorious V.I.C. and I watched in disbelief as Georgia trailed in the fourth quarter.

Today’s game wasn’t even close as the G-Day defense held the Blazers offense to 165 total yards. As freshman quarterback Matthew Stafford learns the ropes, the G-Day defense handling the slack. The 3-headed running attack is also easing the transition. Georgia totaled 145 yards on the ground, with Thomas Brown rushing for 26 yards, Kregg Lumpkin rushing for 54 yards and 1 touchdown, Brannan Southerland running for 1 touchdown, and Danny Ware rushing for 48 yards.

Stafford managed the game extremely well and protected the football considering it was his first home start. He went 10 of 17 for 107 yards and 1 rushing touchdown. The special teams once again showed why their one of the best in the country. Brandon Coutu kicked 2 filed goals, with one of them being 55 yards, and C.J. Byrd blocked a punt and ran it back 12 yards for a touchdown.

I heard a lot of fans complain when Coach Mark Richt went for two fourth down plays. The fans accused him of bad play calling. They wanted him to punt the ball. I support Richt’s decision. I’m sure there will be a time during the season when the Bulldogs will have to complete a fourth down to win the game, especially against teams like Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn. It’s better the Dawgs practice now when the game doesn’t matter as much, than to do it for the first time down the road when the season depends on the completed fourth down.

Next Week: Colorado. Word on the street is that Colorado is bringing their live buffalo to the game. I’ve never seen a buffalo, this should be interesting. Go Dawgs!
