Weekend Roundup

This weekend proved to be busier than expected. On Friday, as I flipped through the local newspaper, I came across an article about local “professional wrestling”, you know men in tights and championship belts. Come to find out, the Carpet Capital has its own wrestling league called Tri-Star Wrestling Action (TWA) and it puts on shows every Friday and Saturday night at the TWA Arena on Reed Road off the Bypass. Five dollars gets you ring-side seats and two hours worth of headlocks and suplexes. It was a great time and one the best $5 I’ve spent in the Carpet Capital. If you’ve read my site, you know I’m a big professional wrestling fan, watching WWE Raw religiously and going to live shows when the WWE travels to Atlanta, so just knowing I can get my live wrestling for the low-low in my new town makes me excited. Although the TWA wrestlers weren’t as “larger-than-life” (size wise) than their WWE counterparts, they still put on a wonderful show for the fans and gave 100% in the squared circle. I’ll definitely go again in the future.

Saturday night I traveled to the ROC to visit Swamps and watch the Atlanta Falcons dismember the Tennessee Titans 20 – 6 in their third preseason game. The first team offense looked good with quarterback Michael Vick going 7 of 14 for 48 yards, 1 touchdown, and rushing for 34 yards. Additionally, Vick showed his developing trust of Michael Jenkins by staying in the pocket and delivering the ball. The highlight of the game goes to rookie running back Jerious Norwood who scored an amazing 62 yard touchdown. Dude jumped through the line untouched and then hit the afterburners. He finished the game with 9 carries for 104 yards and third string running back Marlion Jackson finished with 18 carries 95 yards.

The most impressive thing of the night was the Atlanta defense. They held Tennessee to 54 yards rushing and a time of possession of 24:17, as compared to Atlanta’s 262 yards rushing and a time of possession of 35:43. Additionally, the Dirty Bird Defense sacked the Titians 3 times (Patrick Kerney had 2) and the Allan Rossum contributed with an interception. I know this is preseason, but I’m ready for some football.

Lastly, coagulations to D.J. Shockley for making the Falcons team! I’ve been cheering for him the hold time. I’m glad the Falcons organization recognizes his talents and his ability to lead a football team. I wonder will he wear his old college number now that he’s made the team.
