University of Georgia football starts in 11 days! The Associated Press ranked the Bulldogs #6 in their preseason poll, which puts the Dawgs in prime position to compete for a national title should they win impressively and go undefeated. In recent years, Georgia has had the talent to contend for the national title, but they seem to always fall flat in big games against ranked opponents. Last year it was the season opener against Boise State, the first away game against South Carolina, and the second half of the SEC Championship game against Louisiana State. It seems like when the lights are the brightest; my beloved Dawgs wilt under the pressure.
Offensively, their are questions as to who will start at running back. The team dismissed starting tailback Isiah Crowell, who was the SEC Freshman of the Year, because he was arrested for possessing illegal guns. Last year's backups were unimpressive and Keith Marshall, the team's top recruit is a true freshman. Moreover, the offensive line is young and star wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell now plays defense.
Defensively, the Bulldogs look good, but several key players will miss the first two games of the season because of rule infractions. 1980 was a long time ago. The Bulldog Nation needs a national title, and UGA’s 2012 schedule places them in prime position to run the table. Georgia will play the following teams:
September 1, 2012 - v. Buffalo Bulls. The Blue Bulls play in the MAC and finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 2-9. They have a new head coach and should provide little resistance to UGA.
September 8, 2012 - at Missouri Tigers. UGA will be the first school to official welcome the Tigers to the SEC. They finished 8-5 in their former conference and will hope to shock the Bulldogs with their high powered rushing offense, which finished 9th in the country. Most Georgia fans consider this trap game as it is a national televised game on ESPN and it will be the first meeting of the teams in the new SEC East. This is a must win for the Bulldogs if the hope to repeat as SEC East champions.
September 15, 2012 - v. Florida Atlantic Owls. the Owls play in the Sun Belt and finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 1-11. Georgia's second team should see lots of action for this game.
September 22, 2012 - v. Vanderbilt Commodores. Last year's game against Vandy ended on a heated note when the coaching staff for the respective schools got into an argument about Georgia's post game actions. I imagine the Commodores remember the Dawgs celebrating on their field and they will want to get revenge Between the Hedges. The Commdores have shown that they can beat the Bulldogs; therefore, Georgia better bring their "G" game.
September 29, 2012 - v. Tennessee Volunteers. The Vols have fallen off, going 5-7 last year, but they are dangerous under Derrick Dooley and Georgia should take them seriously.
October 6, 2012 - at #9 South Carolina Gamecocks. As long as I can remember, Georgia has always played the Gamecocks in the second game of the season. The addition of Missouri to the SEC East changed everything and now we will play them in the middle of the season. This will be UGA's first ranked opponent of the season. The Chickens always give us problems, but hopefully we will take advantage of the inexperienced quarterback and regulate them back to second tier status.
October 20, 2012 - v. Kentucky Wildcats. Coach Joker Phillips seems like a nice guy, but Georgia should tame the Cats with ease.
October 27, 2012 - v. #23 Florida Gators. There is nothing like the World's Largest Cocktail Party. The Dawgs left Jackville, Florida with a victory last season and it is time UGS go on a long winning streak. It will be tough and Georgia will have to overcome their desire to lose this game, but I am confident the Dawgs can get it done.
November 3, 2012 - v. Mississppi Rebels. I have never considered Ole Miss a rival, but back when I was at UGA, this use to be one of the craziest home games. Johnny Reb should not give the Bulldogs any trouble.
November 10, 2012 - at Auburn Tigers. The South's Oldest Rivalry is one of my favorite games because of the similarities between the schools. I still mad they got a national title before us, but the joint marching bands is always a sight to see.
November 17, 2012 - v. Georgia Southern Eagles. The Bulldogs generally do not play a "cupcake" team this late in the season, but GSU Eagles needed some cash, and apparently they are willing to travel to collect their beatdown cash.
November 24, 2012 - v. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The North Ave. Trade School will want revenge from last year's home loss. Coach Paul Johnson's triple option is always dangerous, so the Bulldogs will have to play assignment football if they hope to stop their high powered offense.
