Ealey Suspended Indefinitely

The AJC reports that the Washaun Ealey, the starting running back for the University of Georgia has been suspended indefinitely for allegedly missing a "punishment run". As a sophomore, Ealey started 7 games, playing in a total of 12, and rushing for 811 yards and 11 touchdown. This is not the first time Ealey has gotten in trouble while at Georgia. He was suspended for the first game of the 2010-2011 season because of an arrest for a hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

If Ealey wants to keep his starting job, then he needs to get his act together. He was lucky that Coach Richt didn't kick him off the team for the hit-and-run arrest, especially since Ealey assured the coaching staff that he wouldn't drive anymore because his license was suspended. I'll be the first to admit that Ealey's play (and Caleb King and Carlton Thomas for that matter) have been inconsistent, but I'd still like to have him on the team because we still don't really know whether redshirt freshman Ken Malcolm and highly recruited Isaiah Crowell are ready to carry the load for the Bulldogs.

The good think for Ealey is Coach Richt hasn't given up on him - "We have certain expectations and standards that apply to all our student-athletes. We expect them to do things the right way, the Georgia way. If [Ealey] does things the Georgia way, he'll be back in good standing." I just hope Ealey's compatible of doing things the Georgia way.

However, one can argue that there is some truth to the old adage of "addition by subtraction". Approximately five seasons ago, UGA had a crowded backfield at the beginning of the season - Thomas Brown, Kregg Lumpkin, and unproven redshirt freshman Knowshon Moreno. The upperclassmen Brown and Lumpkin got the lion's share of the carries until they unfortunately went down with injuries. As result, Moreno was given an opportunity to excel as the featured back and the rest is history.
