An American sports tradition is if you win your professional or Division I league, then your team travels to Washington D.C. to meet the president of the United States. Later this week the 2009 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers will travel to the White House to mingle with President Barack Obama. However, one important Steeler won’t be in attendance – James Harrison.
I respect that some players may have schedule conflicts and can’t attend, or maybe they have a personal reason for not going, but at a minimum they player should have a plausible excuse, after all the President of the United States is calling. In defending his decision not to go, Harrison stated, “This is how I feel – if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don’t win the Super Bowl. As far as I’m concerned, he [Obama] would’ve invited Arizona if they had won.”
Harrison’s justification is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard because it’s know secret, Obama would’ve invited Arizona had they won because losers don’t get to hob knob with the president. If you’re going to decline the White House visit, then at least come up with a reason that at least makes sense.
