Batman without Bruce Wayne

I haven’t followed DC Comic’s Final Crisis, but recently I read that at the conclusion of the series, the main protagonist, Darkseid, apparently kills Bruce Wayne in one of the final showdowns of the story. It’s hard to believe, but how can there be a Batman without a Bruce Wayne., the playboy billionaire who devoted his life to fighting the mean streets of Gotham.
