Red v. Black

University of Georgia spring football ended on Saturday with the annual G-Day game in front of 19,874. It’s Red versus Black, inter-squad style and according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Carter Strickland, the Bulldogs showed promise as they head into this year’s season. The Red team won the annual game 17-3.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see any of spring practice or the game because the Dawgs don’t get any coverage in Wisconsin. As a result, I’m using Strickland’s observations to gauge the progress of the team.

Strickland stated that junior quarterback Matthew Stafford continued to show physical talents and now he’s starting to show maturity. Two of the four top receivers didn’t play, but junior Michael Moore impressed with 2 touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi will need to make the big plays and Kris Durham and Tony Wilson being sure handed. Additionally, I’m interested in seeing if top prospect A.J. Green will make an impact.

Strickland reported that UGA’s running backs have the potential to be special. If Knowshon Moreno stays healthy and at least duplicate last season, he’ll definitely be in the Heisman race. Additionally, redshirt freshman Caleb King impressed with six rushes for 31 yards and it looks like freshman Richard Samuel may earn playing time. The strength of Georgia’s offense will depend on the consistency of the offensive line and Strickland reports that it’s still a work in progressive. Hopefully, the guys can find that consistency and protect for Stafford and Moreno.

Strickland reports that the defense looks faster, deeper and more athletic than it’s been in years. Linebackers Rennie Curran and Dannell Ellerbe have the potential to be beast. Although I’m not familiar with Darryl Gamble, but Strickland reports that he’s versatile, while safety Reshad Jones showed improvement.
