It’s Why They Play

The impossible happened last night the New York Giants shocked the New England Patriots 17 – 14 in the Super Bowl. On many levels, I was indifferent to this game as I don’t follow either team. A small part of me wanted Tom Brady to win because of his rags to riches story. He was drafted in the sixth round to be a backup and through hard work and grace; he’s considered one of the best to play quarterback. Additionally, it would’ve been neat to see complete perfection. But a large portion of me wanted to see the Giants win because so many people had written them off and you have to admit that the Patriots and Bill Belichick come across as arrogant and I just couldn’t get behind them.

With both of those things being said, I really only hoped for a competitive game and this year’s big game lived up to all the hype reserved for the Super Bowl. It was a defensive struggle for most of the game and both Eli Manning and Tom Brady come through in the clutch and provided fans with some of the best last two minutes of pro football in recent years. Although Eli came through when the Giants needed him to, my Super Bowl MVP goes to the entire Giants defense.
New York wouldn’t have won the game without their solid play.

The best commercial of the night was the Justin Timberlake Pepsi ad where he was being sucked through the town. The most entertaining movie trailer was Angelina Jolie’s “Wanted”. It was pretty cool when she had the guy curve the bullet and when she picked up the guy while doing a 360 in a car. “Iron Man” looked pretty sweet also.

For this Falcons fan, I’m glad the 2007 – 2008 football season is official over. The Birds had a season to forget and hopefully we can have an active and successful off-season and return to proper form in 2008 – 2009. I’ll post my thought on which players the Falcons should acquire and release during the off-season later in the year.
