Walker Picks Emory

National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker (“The Color Purple” – 1983) selected my beloved Emory University as the home for her literary archive. Emory’s Robert Woodruff Library will house 40 years worth of Walker’s work, including journals, drafts of many of her works – including “The Color Purple”, and correspondence between Walker and editors, family, and friends (Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones).

Walker currently travels to Emory every couple of years for readings and meetings with faculty members. Walker stated, “I can imagine in years to come that my papers and memorabilia, my journals and letters, will find themselves always in the company of people who care about many of the things I do: culture, community, spirituality, scholarship and the blessings of ancestors who want each of us to find joy and happiness in this life, by doing the very best we can to be worthy of it.” Walker went on to say in a statement that Emory is “a place where my archives can rest with joy in the company it keeps.”
