It’s hard to imagine that the title of this post could almost be literally and figuratively correct. I wish the media, especially the AJC, would let the alleged Michael Vick dog fighting story rest until more creditable and substantial facts come to light. At this point, the AJC has turned this story into a ridiculous circus.
Earlier in the week the AJC reported alleged commits from former Atlanta Falcon Ray Buchanan corroborating the dogfight allegations. Allegedly “Big Play” Ray said he had first hand knowledge that Vick was into dog fighting. Almost immediately, Buchanan denied the comments once the AJC reported them. Today the AJC reports there is an alleged videotape showing Vick at a dogfight, but no one has come forth to verify if a tape in fact exist.
In both instances, the AJC has reduced itself to reporting unauthenticated hearsay. You’d think the editors and/or the lawyers would check the creditability of sources and verification of information before publishing. It’s one thing to be on the cutting edge of journalistic reporting, bringing to light true and accurate statements, but it’s another thing to publish information without completely verifying that it’s authentic.
This is my last Michael Vick dogfight post until something of substance is learned.
