Georgia needed an opening day opponent for the 2007 season, since the Oregon State Beavers backed out a month ago. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Georgia Bulldogs will kick off next year’s much anticipated season against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This will be a two game series, with Oregon State traveling here first in 2007 and UGA traveling there in 2009. The Cowboys are a Big 12 team and typically finish in the middle of the pack. It would’ve been cooler if Georgia scheduled a higher profile school, but I guess you take what you can get when it comes to last minute scheduling.
In other UGA news, there appears to be a number of Dawg fans asking the athletic department to fire Coach Mark Richt. I have one question for these Bulldog followers: Are you out your mind? Yes, Georgia has had a down year and been embarrassed by a blowout loss to Tennessee and shocking losses to both Vanderbilt and Kentucky, but does this warrant the firing of Georgia’s most successful coach since Vince Dooley? In five seasons, Coach Richt has won 3 SEC Eastern Division titles, 2 SEC championships, and his 52 – 13 record is sixth best in the country since 2001. In 2005, he was elected SEC Coach of the Year by SEC Coaches.
Mark Richt is one of college football’s premier coaches and I can’t see why any rational Dawg fan would want him fired. Who would we replace him with? As much as a love the Bulldogs, I don’t see other established top-tier coaches, like those of Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Southern California, or Texas leaving their respective schools to don the red and black of Georgia.
I even heard one fan suggest we fire Richt and rehire Vince Dooley as coach. Football’s changed since Dooley roamed the sideline. He had his day, and he did great things, but his time has passed and it’s time we move forward with a coach who’s use to coaching today’s players, and that coach is Mark Richt.
