Georgia 14, #9 Florida 21

The Bulldogs faced an uphill battle as they faced off against the Gators. Although I don’t gamble, the spread was 14 points, i.e. Florida was supposed to beat Georgia by 14 points. UF didn’t cover, so in some respects I bet (no pun intended) a lot of Gator fans loss money on Saturday. Georgia played a good game. More specifically, the G-Day defense played a good game. They made the stops when they needed to and even forced a couple fumbles and an interception. They really only allowed 14 points, as one touchdown resulted from a Kregg Lumpkin fumble being run back for a touchdown.

Unfortunately, the offense didn’t help the defense out. Coach Mark Richt said it best, “the problem [with our offense] isn’t the quarterback.” Although Matthew Stafford had 1 fumble and threw 2 interceptions, he was under pressure all game. When he did throw the ball, his wide receivers dropped catchable balls that either hit them in the numbers or the hands.

Stafford finished 13 of 33 for 151 yards and 1 rushing touchdown. Stafford’s numbers may not have been great, but he did a great job spreading the ball around. Mohamed Massaquoi, Martrez Milner, Brannan Southerland, Mikey Henderson, Michael Moore, and Danny Ware all had receiving yards. We have two receiving problems: (1) we don’t have a legitimate #1 receiver and as stated above: our receivers drop too many passes when they’re open. I still can’t believe that tight end Martrez Milner dropped four open passes.

Florida’s defense did an amazing job of slowing our running game. Kregg Lumpkin only rushed for 43 and 1 touchdown and Danny Ware only rushed for 12 yards. Our offensive line needs some serious work. The line of scrimmage is consistently being pushed back. On a bright note, I was good to see the Dawgs run out the “Power I” formation and not the shotgun.

Our loss to Florida eliminated us from the SEC Title race and any hopes of a BCS bowl. At this point, we’re fighting to go to any bowl. Over all, the second half of this game was one of the best halves this team has played all season.

Next Week: The Kentucky Wildcats.
