I decided to do some research about Halloween because there are so many rumors about its origin. It’s mostly celebrated in the Western world and it originated as a pagan festival among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain. The term Halloween is shorthand for All-Hallow-Evening an originally thought to be a luminal time where spirits and humans could communicate with one another.
Halloween became an American holiday in the 19th century after the infusion of European immigrants. It was mostly celebrated by Irish and Scottish Americans and served more as a cultural festival. The holiday became commercialized during the 20th century when companies manufactured Halloween postcards and mask. Trick-or-treating became synonymous with the holiday in the 1950’s.
If you’d like to learn more about Halloween, then click HERE and read the Wikipedia article on the holiday. Have a Happy and Safe Halloween. Or in the alternative, have a Happy and Safe Fall Festival, for those who don’t celebrate Halloween, but still observe dressing in non-monster inspired costumes and giving and getting candy.
