Stop Family Violence

General Statistics:

  1. 1/3 of all violent crimes occur in domestic households.
  2. 1/3 of law enforcement's time / resources are spent on domestic problems.
  3. Over 56,000 cases in Georgia reported last year - FBI estimates over 500,000 incidents of domestic violence each year in Georgia.

Protecting Children:

  1. 50% of men who abuse their wives, abuse their children.
  2. 74% of crimes by juveniles were committed by children who grew up in violent homes.
  3. 63% of boys age 11-20 who are arrested for murder have killed their mother's abusers.
  4. 87% of batterers grew up in home with domestic violence when they were children.
  5. 80% of runaways were abused; 100 children are arrested in Georgia for prostitution each month.

Protecting Women:

  1. 42% of women killed are killed by husband / boyfriends.
  2. Women will leave and return 7 times before final departure because: (1) Fear - 75% of women who are injured, receive their injuries after they leave, also, fear for safety or custody of children if they leave; (2) Money; (3) Courts or police fail.
  3. Incidents of violence are reduced by 80% after Temporary Protective Order is issued.
  4. Each year businesses lose $4 billion because of domestic violence.
  5. There are 3 times as many shelters for animals as for victims of domestic violence.
