It’s highly unlikely that you’ll ever find a Georgia fan cheering for Steve Spurrier because the Old Ball Coach made a career out of frustrating Bulldog fans with his outlandish remarks and his impressive Gator teams. Then one day Spurrier left for the NFL and Georgia supporters didn’t have to worry about his good-for-nothing ways. The Georgia – Florida rivalry was still intense, but at least we didn’t have to worry about Steve Superior gloating if the Gators beat us at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
But as they say, all good things must come to an end as Steve Spurrier returned to SEC football to coach the lowly South Carolina Gamecocks. Although his South Carolina teams are not as dominate as his previous Florida teams, he has managed to make the Gamecocks competitive and every SEC team now realizes that on any given Saturday, South Carolina is capable of an upset. I guess you could say Spurrier has reenergized South Carolina football and this has made him an important man in the state.
Yesterday, Steve Spurrier used his clout and commented that the Confederate flag shouldn’t fly at the South Carolina Statehouse. “My opinion is we don’t need the Confederate flag at our Capital…I don’t really know anybody that wants it there, but I guess there are a lot of South Carolinians that do want it there.” Apparently, Spurrier’s comments came at a surprise and hopefully they will spark an honest debate about the usefulness of having such a divisive symbol flying at the house of government.
I guess this Georgia fan has finally found a reason to cheer for Steve Spurrier because I agree with him; the Confederate flag should not be flown.
