The Falcons reportedly signed former Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington to a $6 million contract on Monday. In addition to paying Harrington an outrageous amount of money, Fun Bobby has automatically named him QB #2. I’m disappointed in the instant carination because I wanted to see Georgia native D.J. Shockley get a legitimate shot at being Michael Vick’s backup. Now it looks like Shockley will once again have to fight for a NFL job, as he as to compete with Chris Redman and James Killian for the number 3 job. If I was a gambling man, I’d put my money on Shockley because Redman has been out the league for two years and Killian’s only claim to fame was playing for the University of Tulsa.
In other football news, the NFL finally got around to suspending Tennessee Titians’ cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones (insert chop, chop, sound) for his off-the-field discretions. Pacman will be suspended for a large portion of the 2007 season. Pacman’s off-the-field actions have led him to be questioned by various law enforcement agencies ten times. The most recent incident took place during the NBA All-Star weekend in Las Vegas, where he was allegedly connected with a fight and shooting at a strip club that has led to a man being paralyzed. Pacman also has a pending case in Georgia.
I think Pacman’s suspension is warranted because he has exercised poor professional judgment and he has cast the NFL in a bad light. It’s one thing to be minimally associated with criminal activity, but it’s a different matter when your name has come up in ten different investigations in several states. I’ll give him credit, he’s never been adjusted guilty of committing crimes, but sometimes it’s worst being associated with constant criminal activity, especially when you’re a high profile athlete.
I hope Pacman reflects on his conduct during his suspension and realize that he has an awesome opportunity to play professional football and positively affect the community, as opposed to getting involved in questionable activities that endanger him personally and professionally.
