Birds Migrating

It’s hard to say goodbye, but sometimes you have to do. Last week the Falcons released a handful of players: Justin Griffith, Ed Hartwell, Patrick Kerney, Matt Lehr, Ashley Lelie, Ike Reese, and Gavin Trquinio. Of all the released players, Pro Bowl defensive end Patrick Kerney will be missed most.

As a Falcon for nine years, Kerney had 270 tackles, 58 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 16 pass defections, but more importantly he was a character guy and defensive leader. He appeared to give 100% on every play and up until the 2006 season, he played in every Falcons game since 1999.

As the old exit, the new enter. The Falcons signed Cincinnati Bengals free-agent outside linebacker Marcus Wilkins to a three-year, $3 million contract. Wilkins will replace Ike Reese as a linebacker reserve and special teams anchor.

The biggest news out of Flowery Branch is the possible signing of New Orleans Saints free-agent wide receiver Joe Horn. According to the AJC, Horn passed his physical and has met with Falcons’ coaches and administrators. Horn will be an instant upgrade to our young and unpredictable receiving core. He’s an 11-year veteran who’s a proven on-the-field leader, a four-time Pro Bowler, and he’s very outspoken, so maybe he’ll encourage quarterback Michael Vick to make better throws.
