Atlanta Hawks center Jason Collier died early this morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 28 years old. Collier played at Georgia Tech and was the longest tenured Hawk player, joining the team for the 2003-04 season after spending three seasons in Houston. Rest in Peace.

While not a pathologists in this case, I suspect this is due to hyertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is a condition associated with severe ventricular arrhythmias and sudden unexplainable deaths in young atheletes. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy results in severely reduced cardiac output and one's haert simply cannot meet the demands of the body. Gross findings would include cardiomegaly and a massive interventricular septum (that may be reduced with surgery to prevent its impinging on the ventricular area of the heart). Histologically, one would see cardiac muscle hypertrophy (increase in size) and fiber disarray. The most reliable method of treatment, if caught in time is a heart transplant.
