Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr.

On September 30, 2005 the U.S. Senate approved the appointment of John G. Roberts as the 17th chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Twenty-two Democrats, about half the caucus and all 55 Republicans confirmed the fifty year old former United States Court of Appeals Judge.

Many are impressed by Chief Justice Roberts' intellect and his legal acumen. He was born in Buffalo, New York in 1955 and he's Harvard educated (A.B. 1976) (J.D. 1979) and he's a former law clerk to Judge Henry Friendly and Associate Justice William Rehnquist.

From what I watched on television and read in the New York Times, Roberts' hasn't really shared many of his personal beliefs or thoughts on legal analysis. He's the great unknown and this could both good and bad. Good (at least in my opinion) because as far as we know he's no Justice Thomas or Justice Scalia who are conservative and seem to want to turn back the hands of time on affirmative action, abortion, and sexual harassment. Roberts could be bad because he could have these crazy views that were never flushed out by the Senate because he refused to open up to America. Only time will tell whether Chief Justice Roberts is the right man to help shape the legal landscape of the United States. God Bless America. Posted by Picasa

i hear he is getting thrown into the fire right away dealing with the Anna Nicole Smith case and the "assisted suicide" bill that allows doctors to perscribe medicine that would allow the terminally ill to kill themselves if they wanted to.

True. How in the world did Anna Nicole Smith get to argue before the Supreme Court? I wonder will the use footage of this on her reality show. Does she still have her reality show?

The assisted suicide case should be interesting. I'm not sure, but isn't it against the law to commit suicide? That would be weird if you could legally assist someone with suicide, but couldn't do it to yourself.*

* This comment doesn't endorse suicide - JUST SAY YES TO LIFE.
