NBA Draft - Atlanta Attempts to Rebound

The Atlanta Hawks have a terrible track record when it comes to the NBA draft. After a horrible 2004-2005 campaign, the Hawks have been blessed with the overall number two pick. Before we can look to the future, we need to look to the past to see who the Hawks have drafted and who they could have had. Of course, hindsight is 20-20, so you can't fault the Hawks 100%, but some of these guys the Hawks passed up makes you wonder - what the heck were the Hawks General Managers thinking.

2003:
The Hawks took Frenchman Boris Diaw with the 21st Pick. Diaw averages 4.3 points per game. The Hawks should've took ACC Player of the Year Josh Howard (27th) and he averages 12 points and 6 rebounds per game.

2001:
The Hawks took Pau Gasol who won the NBA Rookie of Year with the 3rd pick, but traded him to Memphis for all star Shareef Abdur-Rahim (he know longer plays for ATL). Next the Hawks took Jamaal Tinsley 27th whose been a four year starter for Indiana. The trade for Abdur-Rahim was an OK move, but the Hawks should've drafted Tony Parker (28th).

2000:
The Hawks drafted DerMarr Johnson 6th who averaged 8.4 points per game in his second year and then broke his neck in a car crash. He healed and now plays for New York. The Hawks should've drafted Michael Redd (43rd) who has averaged double figures since he's been in the league.

1999:
The Hawks took Jason Terry 10th. He's been a solid pro, but he no longer plays for Atlanta. The Hawks could have drafted Manu Ginobilli (57th).
1998: Atlanta drafted Roshown McLeod 20th, but they could've drafted Ricky Davis (21st), Al Harrington (25th) or Rashard Lewis (32nd).

Below are the top 10 draftees of the 2004-2005 NBA Draft:

1. Milwaukee Bucks - Andrew Bogut C / Utah
2. Atlanta Hawks - Marvin Williams F / North Carolina
3. Utah Jazz - Deron Williams G / Illinois
4. New Orleans Hornets - Chris Paul G / Wake Forest
5. Charlotte Bobcats - Raymond Felton G / North Carolina
6. Portland Trailblazers - Martell Webster G / Seattle Prep (WA) HS
7. Toronto Raptors - Charlie Vilanueva F/ Connecticut
8. New York Knicks - Channing Frye / Arizona
9. Golden State Warriors - Ike Diaogu F / Arizona State
10. Los Angles Lakers - Andrew Bynum C / St. Joseph (NJ) HS

Thanks Nickie for the big ups. The Hawks also drafted Salim Stoudamire of Arizona with the 31st pick. He's a guard and many draft experts claim he was the best pure shooter in the draft.
